A few weeks ago, our family had spring break in Tulsa. In addition to seeing the sights of that part of the Sooner State (the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, the Oklahoma Aquarium, the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, and our hotel's water park), we participated in our agency's Guatemalan Heritage Weekend. The boys had a blast making volcanoes and other crafts, eating delicious food, playing games, and talking adoption. Most especially though, they enjoyed meeting and being with other kids that looked like them and were in multi-racial families just like them. We really loved the whole experience. It was most definitely worth the effort of getting there and those wacky toll roads.
We had a really fun day yesterday as well enjoying the company of a few other families in our area that are adopting from Honduras. It is so comforting to be around other people that know what you are talking about when you mention waiting and trusting, dossiers and referrals, attachment and cocooning, and all the other topics that are part and parcel of international adoption. They understand it because they have been living it and breathing it just as I have, and talking with them is just balm for my soul.
I am so blessed to be a part of this amazing adoption community: local, regional, and in the blog world too.
